Air purification systems can have a huge impact on the quality of your indoor air. They can help greatly if you or someone in your family suffers from allergies or asthma. When you’re shopping for a purification system, there are several things you should know.
The efficiency of in-duct particle removal systems is measured by their minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV). The higher the MERV, the more efficient it is at capturing particles of all sizes.
Inexpensive flat panels are commonly installed in new residential spaces. They have a MERV of between 1 and 4, which is very low. An upgrade to a filter with MERV of 5 to 13 will produce noticeable changes in the quality of indoor air. These filters are often pleated and have several more layers than the cheaper panels, which makes them better at capturing particles and stopping them from circulating in your air.
High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters have the highest MERV, between 17 and 20, but are rarely used in residential systems. This is because they require an extremely powerful fan to push air through them and most residential HVAC systems would require a great deal of modification to be able to accommodate them. They’re also noisy.
Portable units are far less effective than a whole-house system but are convenient for homes without a central HVAC system. They are also useful for new rooms you may have added on that cannot be reached by your existing ductwork. They only help control the air directly surrounding them so you may need several units for sufficient air purification of the entire house. If you have the choice for a whole-house system, it’s much more efficient and cost-effective.
