An air-purification system can greatly improve the indoor air quality of your home — if you choose the right one. If you’ve ever tried to research air-purification equipment, you may have been overwhelmed at the available options. And rightly so. A variety of leading manufacturers offer air-purification systems that utilize differing technologies to rid the home of indoor air pollutants. Knowing the differences between these systems often requires considerable knowledge, expert advice, and looking at these four criteria:
- Removing particles — permanently. Many types of air-purification equipment may report impressive filtration capabilities; however, one factor you must consider to achieve improved air quality is a system’s ability to permanently remove particles from the airstream, which provides a truer picture of its performance. The ideal system will not release particles into the air once they are trapped inside the system via its filtration device.
- Efficiency over time. In general, an air-purification system may purport to perform well in terms of efficiency, but many marketing materials may aggrandize the unit’s efficiency rating within the initial 30 minutes of operation. However, not many units can hold up this rate of performance over time, so it’s important to look details that reveal the unit’s long-term efficiency too.
- Capturing particles — both large and small. Most air quality solutions offer the ability to trap or remove larger particles. But even most standard HVAC air filters can do that. Higher-end air-purification systems should also remove smaller particles, and many can do so down to 0.01 microns in size. These are also the particles that may lead to undesirable health consequences.
- Capturing chemicals and gases. Even fewer systems adequately — or even attempt to — address chemicals and gases, but if a family member’s triggered by them, your air-purification unit should utilize technologies to properly address both.
