Air conditioners are designed to cool your home down. When they malfunction, they can quite easily have the opposite effect, and it’s important to determine the cause as quickly as possible. To that end, the following are some common reasons why your A/C is blowing hot air.

Why Is the Cooling System Blowing Hot Air?

  • The settings are off: It could be due to someone making an adjustment you didn’t know about, or perhaps the thermostat is failing. Check the selector switch first. If that doesn’t solve the problem, check to see that the thermostat is functioning properly and communicating with the air conditioner.
  • The condenser or compressor has failed: As with all mechanical components, these wear out and may need to be replaced over time. To inspect them, look for signs of leaks, dirt or ice buildup, or blockages that may be preventing sufficient cooling. If your current equipment is over 8 years old and the compressor fails, this is also the time to consider upgrading to a more efficient, energy saving unit.  These are more expensive repairs so it is best to look at all your options. Wolff Mechanical will also come out and give you a free second opinion on condenser and compressor failure reports from other local  AC companies.
  • The filter is clogged: Dirty air filters prevent proper airflow through the system. This impacts the cooling capability and can lead to clogs that diminish efficiency. If the air filter is dirty, replace it and see if the unit’s operation improves. Filters need replacing monthly in the South West desert due to high duct levels in the air.
  • No refrigerant: Refrigerant levels need to be checked. Tiny leaks or problems in the compressor can drain refrigerant quickly causing the system to malfunction.

These are the most common causes that could be behind an air conditioner that’s blowing hot air. Filters and settings are factors you can easily correct and don’t require professional assistance. Likewise, cleaning condenser coils and the compressor is something that’s easy to do. However, problems within condensers, compressors, motors and refrigerant tanks are tasks you should hire a professional for.
