The calendar is winding down not only on 2011, but on a variety of tax credits available to homeowners who make energy improvements to their homes by Dec. 31, 2011.
The consumer energy efficiency tax credits by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy apply to heat pumps, furnaces and air conditioning improvements. More specifically, homeowners making upgrades might be eligible for:
- Up to $300 for heat pumps. These run on electricity, moving heat so that cool areas in your home become cooler and warmer areas become warmer.
- Up to $150 for a natural propane, oil or gas furnace.
- Up to $300 for an air-conditioning unit.
- Thirty percent of the cost, up to $500, for a solar water heater. (This improvement is available up to December 31, 2016.)
To be eligible for the tax credits, the improvements must be made to your main residence. The credits cannot be applied to new construction or rental properties.
Wolff Mechanical can help you verify the eligibility of these improvements, as well as help guide you to the very best product choices. We can also give you the necessary manufacturer certification statement, which you will need to claim the tax credits on your 2011 taxes. To apply for the credits, you must also attach IRS form 5695 to your 2011 taxes.
