Mold spores are everywhere in your home, found on most surfaces. Usually they are not an issue unless they propagate and become airborne. In order for them to grow they require three things:

  • moisture
  • nutrients
  • temperature

The most important parts to growth is a wet environment and food, which is essentially any dead organic matter. It can often eat materials used for building, like some glues, paints, papers and wood products.

The worst situation for your home is when warm air passes over cool surfaces, because this is when condensation will occur and there will be enough moisture for mold growth.

You need to be extra vigilant controlling growth after a flood, with roof leaks or any major drainage problem that can provide sources of moisture.

Keeping Your Home Safe

The first thing you should do is try to limit the amount of food it has access to. This means you should keep your house as clean from dust and debris and compost as possible.

Secondly, make sure you regularly replace your air filter. Your filter is one of the best ways to catch mold before it circulates throughout your home, but only if it is in proper working order. Upgrading to better filters or installing ultraviolet lights can improve your air quality further.

Finally, have your ventilation system professionally inspected. If it is allowed to remain in a growth environment it can get out of control.
