Summer is a cooling season, when you blast your A/C all day to beat the heat. Then, practically as soon as it’s finished, we enter heating season and you crank the furnace to abate the cold. As your HVAC system sees all this action, your energy bill goes straight through the roof. How can you save energy while still keeping your home comfortable in both winter and summer? Start by resetting your programmable thermostat.

A programmable thermostat is meant to keep your house comfortable while you’re at home and awake, but switch to a more energy efficient setting while your family is out for the day, or when they go to sleep at night. To reset it, you need to consider when your family will be home and awake.

So, if you wake up at 6:00 am, set your heating temperature to around 70 degrees, or your cooling temperature to about 78. Then, a couple of hours later, when you go to work and the kids go to school, set heating temperature to 62, or the cooling to 85, since no one is home. When everyone gets home in the afternoon, you can set the temperatures back to 70 and 78, but then at night when you go to sleep, the thermostat should resume its energy saving settings. By entering in the approximate times when your family will be home to use your HVAC system, you can set your thermostat to switch between comfort mode and energy-saving mode automatically.

What about weekends? A 5-2 thermostat has separate programming settings, so Monday through Friday it can accommodate your work schedule, while Saturday and Sunday your system keeps you comfortable throughout the day. If you’re home all day Saturday but go out Sunday, you can get a 5-1-1 thermostat for separate Saturday and Sunday settings. Or, if your work schedule is less traditional or your days off are flexible, consider a 7-day thermostat that lets you program each day’s temperature settings separately.
