If your air conditioning or heating systems are getting on in years or they’re just not performing the way you think they should, it may be time to replace the old or failing system with new, energy-efficient equipment. If you do so before the end of 2013, you’ll qualify for generous federal energy tax credits that Congress reinstated at the beginning of the year. Act now before time runs out.You should consider replacing your cooling or heating systems if they are:
- 10-15 years or older
- Functioning poorly despite proper maintenance
- Costing you in repairs more than 50 percent of the price of new equipment
If this applies to you, this year is an ideal time to get a new A/C, heat pump or furnace. If you buy a qualifying system in 2013 (or purchased it in 2012), you will be eligible for energy tax credits for energy efficiency. If you buy a new central A/C or heat pump that meets minimum efficiency standards, you can claim up to a $300 credit on your taxes. But what if you need to replace more than one piece of HVAC equipment? In that case, until the end of this year, you can claim 10 percent of what you paid, or up to $500.
With a new high-efficiency cooling or heating system, you get improved energy efficiency and lower costs. For example, your A/C consumes 44 percent of the energy in your home, more if it’s old or faulty. Use the federal energy tax credits to save money now, and then enjoy savings for years to come in the form of lower utility bills. And you can help improve the environment while you save money. If your A/C or heat pump predates 2010, it likely uses R-22 refrigerant, a hydrochlorofluorocarbon that’s being phased out due to its harm to the environment. Your new system will feature chlorine-free R-410A, a “greener” alternative.
