Is it time to change the air filter in your HVAC system? If you are not sure, this is a good time to install a new filter and begin a regular schedule of filter replacement.
Changing the filter regularly is essential to protecting your system components from dirt and debris. A buildup on the blower can cause the fan to run out of balance. This reduces energy efficiency and can eventually can lead to expensive repairs by putting excess strain on the system components.
There is a measurement for a filter’s ability to catch air particles called the Minimum efficiency reporting value or MERV rating. A scale of 1-20 is used with the higher numbers being the most efficient at trapping particles.
Here are the filter types with MERV ratings that are available today:
- Disposable fiberglass filters – Thin construction gives this filter the ability to trap large particles, but small pollutants can pass through into your air circulation, however your HVAC components will be protected. This is not a good choice for anyone with air quality concerns. The MERV rating is 1-4.
- Disposable pleated filters – This is a popular choice among homeowners. The folded design provides a large filter area to catch air particles of all sizes. The MERV is a respectable 6-12.
- Washable filters – Extensive maintenance makes this an unpopular option. A filter that is still damp when installed can lead to mold formation. The MERV rating is a low 1-4.
- High-efficiency filters – Dense filter material is used to provide superior ability at trapping all size particles, however the extreme nature can restrict airflow through the system. This filter can benefit homeowners with special air quality concerns.
Anyone who is concerned about indoor air quality will want to change the air filter on a regular basis. A good quality filter is an crucial part of improving indoor air quality and is especially important if family members suffer from allergies.
