You rely on you air conditioner to keep your home cool during the hot days and nights of the summer months. However, if it’s not cooling properly, it may be time to replace it. If your air conditioner isn’t working as efficiently as it used to, replacement can provide many benefits, such as:

Before you make a call to a technician to inspect or repair your HVAC system, though, consider a few tips that can help you determine whether it’s time to replace your air conditioner.
- Make sure it has power by checking the circuit breaker or fuse that runs your air conditioner at the main electrical panel. Sometimes a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse is the cause of this power loss. If this isn’t the problem, find the switch that operates your air conditioner. Turn the switch off and on and this may reset the connection to start the air conditioner.
- Turn on the fan to determine if the blower is getting any power. If it starts, the blower is getting power. If the fan doesn’t turn on, the blower may be malfunctioning.
- Before you replace your air conditioner, check the thermostat settings to make sure someone didn’t switch it from “cool” or “auto.” Make sure the temperature setting is correct as well. If it has been more than a couple of months since you changed the thermostat’s batteries, replace them with new ones.
- Clean condenser coils and replace the air filter. Dirty condenser coils affect the efficiency of your air conditioner. The cooling capacity of your air conditioner is also reduced when the air filter is clogged with dirt, dust and other debris.
